The children in Year 2 have been talking about space exploration as part of our work in History. After making our timeline in previous sessions and discussing the key events in space travel history we then decided to get our thinking hats out. We explored the statement, “it is a good idea to explore space.” As you can see the children had some differing opinions on this and some had changed their mind by the end of the session.
Healthy Eating Workshop
Sarah McAllister came into school to work with all the different year groups including Nursery to talk to the children about the importance of Healthy Eating. The children were able to help make and try some foods. The children really enjoyed the workshops.
Tesco Carol Singing and Christmas Jumper Day
On Friday 15th December some of the children in Year 1 and Year 2 were Carol Singing at Tesco. This week many different groups of children from our school have visited various places in our local community to perform their carol singing. A big thank you to our Bishop Auckland Tesco Extra Store. The children had a lovely time.
It was also Christmas Jumper Day for the charity ‘Save the Children’ thank you to all the parents who sent in a donation. We raised almost £100, I’m sure you will all agree the children look fantastic in the outfits. Thank you.
Bling your bike or scooter day!
We would like to say a huge thank you to all the parents and children who worked hard to decorate bike and scooters for “Bling your bike” day. We were amazed to see 100 beautifully decorated bikes and scooters brought into school! Today’s event was not only the start of our festive celebrations, but also to raise the profile of active journeys to school. We have recently started using the “WOW travel tracker” to monitor our journeys to school and hope that even over the colder winter months children can make at least one active journey to school a week.
Remembrance Day
On Friday 10th November the Year 2 children spent some time outside talking about the reason we have ‘Remembrance Day’. The children had made poppies in class and made a display on the school field which our Chair of Governors, Helen Haley said looked, “fantastic” she also stayed while we all had a minute silence.
Durham Cathedral – Year 2
We had a fantastic day at Durham cathedral on Tuesday. We went on the bus and then walked up to the Cathedral. We met out tour guides then walked around the Cathedral in two groups. The children answered questions about Saint Cuthbert and our guide was very impressed with their knowledge. We enjoyed a lovely packed lunch in the Cloisters then continued our learning with some observational drawing on the afternoon. The children’s behaviour was outstanding and this was commented on several times by various members of the public! This always makes us feel very proud of our children. A super day, well done Year 2 children!
Hamsterley Forest – Year 1
The children in Year 1 had a lovely day in Hamsterley Forest. We enjoyed exploring the forest and searching for the Gruffalo!
Thinking of others at Harvest time
Following the Harvest Celebration some of the Year 2 children visited people who live close to the school, taking gifts of fresh produce, flowers and letters to thank them for being good neighbours.
Harvest Festival
The whole school and nursery walked along to the church in the autumn sunshine and were joined by over 100 family and friends to celebrate the harvest. I’m sure you will all agree that the children’s behaviour was fantastic as always and their singing and reading was amazing.
We would like to thank you all for your generous harvest gifts, some of which have been given to our neighbours to thank them for watching over the school and the majority have been taken up to Woodhouse Close Church and foodbank.
Macmillan Coffee Afternoon and Curriculum Display
On Thursday 5th October school was once again open for family and friends to join us to fundraise for this very worthwhile cause. Thank you for all your donations of cakes – they were delicious!
We hope you also enjoyed seeing the different activities around the school, particularly the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths challenges.
Before half term we will give out information on suitable Apps to help with your child’s literacy and numeracy skills.
