As part of Science Week, the children in Year 1 have been taste-testing different food and using their Literacy skills to accurately describe what they had eaten. Yum!
Year 1 Cycling
This half term children from Year 1 have taken part in cycling coaching on a Friday morning with Mr Raine and Mr Graham. In these sessions the children have learned how to ride stabilizer free, and in the last 4 weeks have become much more confident cyclists. The children have worked hard and shown great persistence and resilience when developing their skills. Well done to all of the children who have taken part!
Locomotion – Year 1 Trip
The children in class 3 and 4 have been on a lovely trip this week to the Locomotion Museum in Shildon, we walked down to Bishop Auckland train station and travelled to Shildon by train. They were all very excited to go through the tunnel. We have a lovely time at the museum learning about different trains and some of us even were able to see the Royal carriage. We had our lunch outside as the weather was very kind to us, and then were able to burn off some energy in the play area. The behaviour of the children was fantastic all day, and many other visitors to the museum commented on this.
After School Childcare Provision
At the start of the Summer Term 2018, the school extended it’s out of hours provision. We still have a very well-attended Breakfast Club for Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children from 8am.
Now we also offer After School Childcare from 3pm until 5.30pm for Reception age children and over. We also take siblings from the junior school. Please contact the school office if you would like further information on this wraparound childcare provision.
Sport Relief 2018
A fantastic active day at school today for Sport Relief 2018. Each group of children managed to go outside with Mr Thompson leading some great activities; such as tennis, soft play and using the balance bikes, those who brought their own bikes and scooters were also able to use them during this time. As you can see from the photographs fun was had by all!
Terrific Tales with Performing Arts students
We have had some Performing Arts students from Bishop Auckland College in school for the last 3 days doing some interesting activities working with children from all year groups including the Nursery.
Cycling
During the first half term after the Christmas holidays a small group of Year 2 children have worked with Mr Raine to improve their cycling skills while he completes his Level 2 Coaching award with British Cycling. The children practised pedalling, breaking and cornering skills and were able to put these together to work to improve their performance around a short circuit on the playground. Over the rest of the year other opportunities will be available for children to work with Mr Raine to develop cycling within the school.
Big Schools’ Birdwatch
Every year we participate in the Big Schools’ Birdwatch. As a green flag school we continuously encourage our children to be aware of their natural environment and how their actions can impact on the rest of the world, eg global warming. The children saw a good range of birds and of course we have entered the results via the RSPB website so that the scientists can study the health or eco system. It is always lovely to hear bird song on a spring morning!
Chinese Lion Assembly
We welcomed Michael into school today for a wonderful Chinese Lion Assembly. He told us the story of ‘The Ghost Lion’ and some of us, including some nursery children, were able to have a turn either in the Lion puppets, drum or tambourine. Below you can view a video showing some of the interesting things we saw and some lovely photographs.

STEM – Building earthquake proof structures
Year 2 children are learning how engineers design and construct buildings to withstand earthquake damage by building their own model structures using toothpicks, straws, lolly sticks and play dough. They experimented to see how earthquake-proof their buildings are by testing them in an earthquake simulated bowl of jelly. Earthquakes can cause walls to crack, foundations to move and even entire buildings to crumple, engineers incorporate into their structural designs techniques that withstand damage from earthquake forces, for example, cross bracing, large bases and tapered geometry. Earthquake-proof buildings are intended to bend and sway with the motion of earthquakes, or are isolated from the movement by sliders. Engineers come up with an idea, test it, and then re-engineer the structure based on its performance. Class 6 loved testing their structures.
