Leah Pattison, an art graduate,
originally from County Durham founded START following a
working holiday to India in 1995. During her stay, Leah
taught English to young girls at a leprosy colony in
Central India. It was here that she realised her deep
desire to contribute to women who had been branded
outcasts by society.

START is a relatively new charity founded with a clear
purpose:
"to help women suffering from leprosy"
START was formed in August 2000 and is dedicated to
supporting the efforts of Leah Pattison. Working in the
slums of Nagpur, India, Leah and Usha Patil have treated
and cared for women suffering from leprosy. |

Each year our school raises money for
START, a charity project which supports Leah and Ushah.
Children decided upon having shops and each class had a
shop in each they bought and sold items - a bit like a
car boot sale! The children sold all sorts of items
such as old toys and books. There was a lucky dip. The
was jewellery for sale, bookmarks, diaries, crispy
cakes, biscuits - yum yum.
£300 was raised - it was a FANTASTIC EFFORT by our
wonderful children, who worked so hard and showed so
much enthusiasm for this charitable project.

We raised money for the START charity by having class shops.
