Naughty Bus

4th February 2020 By andrewgraham

After lots of activities and learning in the classroom about the book ‘Naughty Bus’ we had our own exciting adventure on a real double decker bus! This was an excellent experience for our children going out on to a service bus and taking a trip up to Wolsingham. Next week we will be writing our own Naughty Bus book with brand new, exciting adventures.

Library

4th February 2020 By andrewgraham

As part of National Storytelling Week we have enjoyed a visit to our local library. The children have learnt about what a library is and enjoyed exploring all the fantastic books in the children’s area.  They also sat beautifully and listened to a story read by the librarian. Thank you to all the parents who joined us on this visit and thank you to the library.  Lots of our children who had parents with them signed up and received their own membership card! This is wonderful!

Chinese New Year

4th February 2020 By andrewgraham

The children have all had a wonderful week learning about Chinese New Year and how and why it is celebrated. As part of this we have learnt about the Chinese Zodiac race between the animals and we have listened to the story of the Chinese ghost lion and watched a special lion dance. The children were so captivated by this story that they made their own lion and performed their own lion dance! We’ve listened to Chinese music and sampled some Chinese food.

Number Book

4th February 2020 By andrewgraham

In Reception the children are making fantastic progress with their understanding of number, particularly with the numberblocks programmes. This week we worked as a team to make our own number book which we have laminated and put together so we can read it in the classroom.

Diwali

8th November 2019 By andrewgraham

This week in Reception we have been learning about Diwali – the Hindu festival of light. Throughout the week the children have tried special foods, dressed up and danced to Indian music. The children have listened to the story of Rama, Sita and The Demon King. The children can confidently retell the story remembering that Ravana, the Demon King, had 10 heads, 10 arms and 20 eyes! We compared this story to a non-fiction book called ‘Diwali’ and noticed the differences. We have used chalk and powder paints mixed with water to brush fireworks onto the yard. The children have painted rangoli patterns and made them on the light table with loose parts with superb attention to detail. In the malleable area the children have used clay to make diva lamps. A very busy week!

Pumpkin Soup

23rd October 2019 By andrewgraham

We’ve been very busy in Reception this week! The children are beginning to get excited about Halloween and have been very interested in the pumpkins and ‘munchkins’ in the classroom. We wondered what we could do with the pumpkins and decided we could make pumpkin soup. We began by finding a recipe and we read through this together. From this we wrote a shopping list for all of the ingredients and the children were very keen to write their own lists during continuous provision time. We counted some of our left over snack money ready to take to ASDA and we checked the weather forecast to see which day would be best. On Tuesday we all walked to ASDA armed with our shopping lists and bags. The children’s behaviour was excellent and they were very good at finding all of the items on the shopping list. One of the children asked if we could put some pennies in the guide dog charity box so we used our change from the shopping to help. Back at school there was lots of peeling and chopping to be done which was hard work but the children were able to do this, showing lots of perseverance. When it was finally cooked we all enjoyed dipping our bread into the soup and the children thought it was delicious. There were lots of hands up for more! We sat around in a circle together and listened to the story ‘Pumpkin Soup’. What an exciting week!

Autumn Time

23rd October 2019 By andrewgraham

Autumn time is a wonderful time of year which we love learning about in Reception. Our children helped to look for signs of autumn in the environment and we brought what we found back into our classroom. The conker tray has been very popular and there were so many mathematical opportunities for the children to explore. The children were very keen to help build our dark tent and they worked excellently as a team to do this. In the tent they have explored light and dark using the torches and glow in the dark items.  Of course the children have enjoyed all of our Halloween items to explore as they are very excited for Halloween!
