Our children experienced a carousel of activities on Outdoor Classroom Day. They planted plants in pots, found minbeasts, sat around the fire pit and toasted marshmallows which was a big hit with the children and staff! There were craft activities, the parachute, PE activities and the soft play equipment. The children loved the day and worked together well solving problems and discovering new possibilities.
Potting Plants
This week in year 1 the children have listened to ‘The Terrible Greedy Fossifoo’ the important message in the story is that we should take care of our environment. We therefore decided in our Science learning to grow plants. The children followed instructions to teach themselves how to successfully grow plants.
Walworth Birds of Prey
Amazing visit from Walworth Birds of Prey today. The children and staff saw hawks, buzzards and barn owls and held their breath as owls flew right over their heads! what a fabulous experience!
Making a Waterproof Outfit
In Year 1 we have been reading the story of The Gingerbread Man. We thought that if the Gingerbread Man had a waterproof outfit he may not have needed the fox’s help to cross the river. We investigate different materials to find out which were waterproof and then made outfits for our gingerbread biscuits.
Chinese New Year
This week in school we are celebrating Chinese New Year or should we say it in Chinese, Kung hei fat choy!
On Monday it was a great start to the celebrations of Chinese New Year because Michael, a good friend of the school brought along his Chinese Lions and told the legendary story of the Ghost Lion to the children. Every child in the school took part in this wonderful assembly including the nursery children. They answered lots of questions and were picked to either perform the lion’s dance or beat the drums. This good luck dance was very well received by the children and all were keen to participate.
Thank you Michael for a fantastic morning.
Mini Medics
This week the children were taught First Aid by professional First Aider, Gary White. Gary showed the children how to apply basic skills such as what to do if their friend is having an asthma attack or choking. They even did some CPR on the manikin. The children made some posters using publisher etc to display around school encouraging people to stay calm and talk to their patient. Of course they must dial 999 in an emergency. Well done children.
Sewing
The children have been learning a new skill this half-term; sewing! We are going to use this joining technique to make a class flag.
Neuroscience
16/11/19
Today the children have continued to learn about the brain in a neuroscience session! The children learnt all about how neural pathways are made in the brain when we learn something new. When something is new to us we try and neural pathways are relatively weak. However, through practice, perseverance and hard work our neural pathways become stronger. As a visual example of this the children built neural pathways from one neuron to another using paper chains. By the end of the session the children all understood how we strengthen neural pathways to make us better at things. As you can see the children had a great time.
Land of Ice and Snow
This week Year 1 have been investigating properties of ice. It has been a lovely introduction to our new topic The Land of ice and Snow.
Remembrance Assembly
The children took part in a Remembrance assembly to mark 100 years since World War 1 ended. Each child made their own poppy which they placed in the shape of 100 as an act of remembrance. “We recognise the importance of teaching the children the meaning of the poppy and Remembrance Day so we wanted to create an opportunity where they could reflect on this.”
